Since we began in 2005,the majority of Fundamentals work has focused on helping children and young people in crisis and the communities in which they live. We have alleviated some of the hardship these young people face by providing life changing services, support and provision that has been tailored specifically to meet their needs and make a positive impact on their lives and futures. We have funded this work through commissioned contracts and funding from Connexions West Yorkshire, The Youth Justice Board, Community Safety Partnership, Neighbourhood Renewal,The Big Lottery Fund and smaller grants, donations and active fund-raising.
We have worked with just over 3000 children and young people in some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the UK, predominantly ex-coal mining communities in West Yorkshire and on the streets and in the orphanages of Eastern Europe. Also, we have provided much needed personal support and aid for 100’s of families in these communities.
“94% of the children and young people we have worked with have described their support from us as life changing”
“96% of parents and family members describe our services as being life changing for them and the wider family”
(Taken from an independent audit of our services undertaken in August 2007)
So how have we and how are we doing this work?......
1. We have a set up a beautiful Victorian Style Social Enterprise restaurant 'The Hydro' in Buxton Derbyshire that provides employment, training for unemployed people and income for the charity.
2. We have individually tailored and delivered one to one care, support packages for 2600 young people in crisis and excluded from school referred to us from the Police, Schools, Parents, Social Workers and the YOT.
3. We have provided 26 hours of free education programmes every week for the past 4 years. These have included: numeracy, literacy, social skills, mechanics, IT, music and drama, life skills, self defence, cooking, gardening and sports.
3. We have provided food, aid, accommodation and education for 100’s of street kids and orphans in Eastern Europe.
4. We have run 22 residential activity holidays for 560 children and young people.
5. We have successfully delivered 6 contracts worth £1.6m for Connexions West Yorkshire, Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and Wakefield College.
6. We ran a 2 year environmental and agricultural programme called
‘Food 4 Thought’ funded by the Big Lottery Fund that delivered 1000’s of hours of free, fun and educational activities for over 400 young people.
7. As well as these programmes we have successfully run after school activities, crime divergence projects and summer schools.

Fundamental is one of a small number of local charitable organisations that really supports the young people of today, offering counselling, activities during the school holidays, training, and much more. It's great to see a charity providing great services for young people, their families and communities in such a positive and fun way."
